Chain Link Fencing Safety Tips

How to Eliminate Chain Link Fence Safety Risks for Small Children

As a parent, the safety of your child is always on your mind. In fact, you may even decide to enclose the backyard with a chain link fence to ensure your little one is kept safe and secure. What you may not realize is without the proper safety measures, chain link fencing can also pose a hazard to your child’s safety. Try these solutions to ensure your fence is safe for kids.

Deter Climbing

It’s no secret children love to climb, and chain link fences give them the ideal opportunity to do this. Unfortunately, young children don’t know their limits and will either climb over the fence or not know how to get down. They could also topple over the fence or become stranded until help is at hand.

To prevent this from happening, add privacy shields to the chain link fence. These strips are weaved into the holes of the fence and effectively remove hand and toe holds. You can find them at your local home improvement store or ask your contractor to install them. Privacy shields will also prevent strangers from seeing your child and trying to approach them.

Cover Sharp Edges

Under normal circumstances, the top edges of a chain link fence may be fine without the need for protective safety rails. However, when young children are involved it is better to add some. Install safety covers on the sharp edges to prevent children from catching their clothing on the fence while playing or from cutting themselves on sharp edges.

This product could be sold as a baseball fence crown, safety covers, top cap protectors, or any variety of names. You can install this yourself, as a typical cover comes in coils of corrugated or smooth plastic that will be clamped in place over the top of the fence.
