Is It Possible to Paint Vinyl Fencing

Can Vinyl Fence Be Painted?

Perhaps you have moved into a new house that already has vinyl fencing in a color you can’t stand. Or you have had your vinyl fence for long that you have grown tired of the color. So, the question is, then, can it be painted? A simple search can provide you with plenty of articles that explain how to paint a vinyl fence. However, should you paint your vinyl fence? We at DF Fencing Elizabethtown don’t think you should.

Below are three reasons we don’t recommend painting a vinyl fence:

  • The fence will no longer be low maintenance. A vinyl fence is made of polyvinyl chloride mixed with various other ingredients to produce a durable and low-maintenance product. It has been specifically designed to never need painting. In fact, because it never needs painting is one of the main reasons homeowners choose it. When you apply paint to a vinyl fence, it will no longer be low maintenance. You will have to reapply the paint every few years in order for it to keep it looking fresh, so it will effectively need as much maintenance as a wood fence.

  • Most paint will not adhere to a vinyl fence. Because vinyl is a non-porous material, most paint will not adhere to it. Some paint may stick to begin with, but over time will peel off. If you do paint a vinyl fence, you need to use a primer and paint that are designed to use on vinyl products. Even then, you run the risk of the paint peeling or damaging the surface.

  • It could void the warranty. Most reputable vinyl fence manufacturers offer warranties, so painting your vinyl fence may damage the surface, which in turn will void the warranty. Before you decide to paint your vinyl fence, check the warranty and contact the manufacturer if you are unsure.
